Suez Canal blocked after colossal cargo ship smashes into bridge | World | News

The Suez Canal is blocked after a giant cargo ship crashed into a bridge. The waterway in Egypt is currently completely closed to traffic following the collision involving the container ship and the Mansi bridge.

The vital stretch of water, which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez and divides Africa and Asia, made headlines in 2021 after a colossal container ship got stuck for nearly a week.

The head of the Suez Canal Authority has reported that the rudder of the container ship in the Suez Canal had been disrupted. Navigational traffic has not been affected, the Authority added.

The 2021 blunder saw the ship Ever Given straddle both lanes of the narrow passage, causing large tailbacks as ships attempt to cross between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. At the time, Regional expert Dr Laleh Khalili warned that the delays to international shipping will accrue a hefty cost down the line.
