Makeup pro shares where to apply blusher to make you look more ‘youthful’

Blusher is a staple in many makeup routines, adding a touch of colour and bringing life to the face.

However, according to Suzie O’Neil, makeup artist and owner of AYU Cosmetics, many of us might be applying it incorrectly, especially if a youthful look is the goal.

O’Neil said: “The placement of the blusher can make a big difference. While applying blush to the apples of your cheeks (the fleshy part that gets rounder when you smile) might seem intuitive, it can drag the face down and emphasise wrinkles.”

Instead, the makeup pro suggests a different approach for a lifted, youthful appearance

She added: “Try applying blush higher up on the cheekbone, following a line from the centre of your pupil outwards.

“This placement mimics a natural flush and gives the illusion of higher cheekbones, creating a more youthful silhouette.”

O’Neil emphasises the importance of blending for a seamless finish.

“A harsh line of blush can be ageing,” she said. “Use a fluffy brush to blend the colour upwards and outwards towards your temples. This creates a soft, natural flush that flatters all face shapes.”

For those who struggle with blush placement, O’Neil recommends using a cream or liquid formula as these can “blend more easily”.

Step-by-step guide for applying the blusher

Use the “two-finger technique” for perfect placement. Simply hold two fingers next to your nose and start blending your blush from there.

Blush layering for a dewy glow

Start with a cream blush as your base. Cream formulas blend beautifully for a natural, dewy finish. Apply it to the higher points of your cheeks and blend upwards.

Follow with a powder blush to set the cream and add dimension. This layering technique not only makes your blush last longer but also creates a youthful, radiant glow.

Blending is key

Harsh lines are a no-go! Use a sweeping and circular motion to blend the blush seamlessly into your skin. Focus on the outer edges and buff it into your foundation or contour for a natural transition. Remember, a diffused blush is a youthful blush.

Highlight for extra lift

Take your youthful glow to the next level with a touch of highlighter.

Apply it just above your blush on the cheekbones. This draws attention to the high points of your face, creating a lifting effect. Choose a highlighter that complements your blush undertone for a cohesive and youthful look.
