Fans set for major disappointment as key part of Trooping the Colour may not go ahead | Royal | News

Royal fans could be faced with a major disappointment today over a key feature at the Trooping the Colour ceremony.

The King’s official birthday celebrations take place every year and are filled with pomp and pageantry.

Each year, the ceremony, which includes more than 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians, features a different regimental colour (flag), which is trooped and members of the five Foot Guards regiments take turns with it to lead the parade.

Following the parade, the event is wrapped up with a RAF flypast over Buckingham Palace, watched by the Royal Family from the Palace balcony.

But this year’s weather may prove challenging as forecasts have warned that rain could fall in the capital throughout the day with thousands of Brits bracing for the adverse weather with raincoats and umbrellas.

The Royal Air Force posted on X this morning its plans for today’s festivities with a subtle warning they may not go ahead as such.

The tweet said: “Today at 1pm, subject to weather, serviceability, & operational requirements, over 30 aircraft will take to the skies above London and over Buckingham Palace to celebrate His Majesty The King’s Official Birthday following the King’s Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour).”

Back in May 2023 during the King’s Coronation, the RAF flypast lasted less than three minutes instead of six due to the weather, which could also be an option for today.

The original route was set to be over parts of Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex on the way to London but was instead split into zones each with a time slot when airspace is restricted.

However, if the weather ends up cooperating the RAF flypast will begin its route at 11am, when the aircraft will amass off the coast of Suffolk and will head onto land, where they will travel through Suffolk heading across Ipswich after 12:30pm and then entering Essex around 12.35pm.

They will then pass over Colchester and Chelmsford at about 12:40pm before entering London from the North East, typically flying over the Hainault before making their way into the capital’s centre via Stratford.

This is expected at the earliest at 12.40pm with the flyover at Buckingham Palace scheduled for 1pm.

After travelling over the royal residence the planes will exit the city through the North West, heading towards the east of Oxford, before landing in Reading.
