Danish Prince Joachim heads to US after Queen Margrethe strips titles from his children | Royal | News

Prince Joachim of Denmark will relocate to the United States after his children were stripped of their titles from Queen Margrethe, a report has revealed. The 53-year-old Danish royal, who is sixth-in-line to the throne, will head off to Washington DC next year.

He is expected to move to the United States in the second half of 2023, according to the Danish paper BT.

Joachim is currently working as defence attaché in Paris, a post he has held since 2020.

The news comes after Queen Margrethe removed the titles from Joachim’s four children.

Margrethe said her decision to remove the titles was intended to ensure the country’s monarchy was “keeping with the times”.

The move meant her grandchildren Nikolai, 23, Felix, 20, Henrik, 13, and Athena, 10, will no longer be known as princes or princesses.

They will instead be referred to as Count or Countess of Monpezat.

The decision to slim down the Danish Royal Family follows similar moves by other blue-blooded Europeans.

Sweden and Belgium have also slimmed down their respective Royal Families, according to the Telegraph.

“It’s never fun to see your children being harmed.

“They have been put in a situation they do not understand.”

His wife, Princess Marie, even claimed that the couple’s youngest child, Princess Athena, had been bullied at school.

Joachim’s ex-wife Alexandra, 58, who is the mother of Nikolai and Felix, also criticised the decision.

She claimed that the bolt from the blue decision had left her sons feeling “ostracised”.

However, Queen Margrethe’s spokesman said the move came as an extension of the monarch’s desire to slim the Danish monarchy down.

They said: “We understand that there are many emotions at stake at the moment, but we hope that the Queen’s wish to future-proof the Royal Household will be respected.”

The Danish royal household insisted that Prince Joachim was first informed of the decision to remove his children’s titles back in May, the Telegraph has claimed.

Queen Margrethe added: “No one should be in doubt that my children, daughters-in-law and grandchildren are my great joy and pride.

“I now hope that we as a family can find the peace to find our way through this situation.”
