Bimbos? Not a bit of it. The Carry On girls always outsmarted the men | Films | Entertainment

Kenneth Williams and Hattie Jacques in Carry On Doctor (Image: ITV) It was 5.30am and still dark when Sally Geeson arrived at Pinewood Studios to start filming Carry On Abroad. In spring 1972, the comedy franchise already had legions of adoring fans, tickled pink by its bawdy humour. But the 21-year-old actress wasn’t sure what reception to expect from the established cast. She had heard, for instance, that Kenneth Williams could be “tough” with newcomers. So, it was with slight trepidation that Sally climbed the stairs to the makeup room until, suddenly, something made her stop dead on the spot. ... Read more

Disney fans challenged to find iconic character hidden in new film | Films | Entertainment

The latest star-studded animated flick from Disney, Wish, has a number of sensational easter eggs and cameos as it was specially chosen to mark the studios’ 100th anniversary. While fans have picked up many of the references, from Fairy Godmother’s cloak to an iconic piece of Frozen dialogue being casually uttered, the directors challenged them to find a purposefully hard-to-spot cameo. While telling Daily Express about his favourite easter eggs in the film at Wish’s UK premiere, Chris Buck declared: “There’s one that I challenge the fans to find. [The animators] put it in there for me because I was ... Read more

Wonka movie first reactions slam ‘messy’ Timothée Chalamet prequel | Films | Entertainment

It’s been 18 years since Johnny Depp starred in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and over half a century on from Gene Wilder’s take on Willy Wonka. Rather than yet another adaptation of the 1964 Roald Dahl classic book, Warner Bros has instead opted for a prequel origin story. From the writer and director of the Paddington movies (Simon Farnaby and Paul King) comes Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet as the chocolatier in his youth. The $125 million movie sports an all-star cast of British greats from Rowan Atkinson and Olivia Colman to Matt Lucas, Sally Hawkins ... Read more

John Wayne ‘completely exhausted’ on set where director ‘punched’ leading lady | Films | Entertainment

John Wayne had already remade 1959’s Rio Bravo, a film about a sheriff defending his office from outlaws, in 1966’s El Dorado. Yet Howard Hawks, who directed both of those films, wanted to make it a third time in 1970’s Rio Lobo. When the filmmaker first approached Duke about the idea, the Hollywood star replied: “Do I get to play the drunk this time?” Originally set to be shot in Durango, Mexico for $5 million, Rio Lobo – which is on ITV4 today – was filmed for an extra $1 million at Old Tucson, Arizona, since 1971’s Lawman was already ... John Wayne estate shares rare The Searchers behind-the-scenes set photo | Films | Entertainment

Back in 1956, John Wayne starred in what many consider to be one of his greatest movies. John Ford’s The Searchers, one of the best Westerns ever made, saw Duke play a Civil War veteran spending years searching for his abducted niece, played by Natalie Wood. The iconic film was shot in Ford’s favoured Monument Valley, part of the Navajo territory on the Arizona/Utah state line, where temperatures during filming could reach heights of 49°C (120°F). Wayne’s estate has recently shared a photo from the hot set with Duke dressed as Ethan Edwards and posing with a young fan during ... Read more

Brian May and Roger Taylor unveil their two favourite Queen live concert venues | Films | Entertainment

As for Roger, his favourite was on the West Coast at the Greek-styled Kia Forum, formerly called the LA Forum. The drummer said: “We used to love places like the LA Forum because they’re just great places. “They’ve got something magical.  And of course, the audience are great.” Reflecting on Queen’s ascent to the stadium league, Sir Brian recalled that it actually began in South America back in 1981. Sir Brian said: “Playing stadiums instead of arenas happened in South America.  We went down there with jumbo jets full of gear to play these football stadiums, not knowing if we ... Read more

Why Picasso is becoming increasingly Pablo-matic: BBC’s new documentary reveals all | Films | Entertainment

Portrait of Pablo Picasso (Image: Getty) When he died at the age of 91 in 1973, Pablo Picasso was hailed as far and away the greatest artist of the 20th Century. News reports at the time declared: “Picasso did things no man had ever done before with brush and canvas.” An astounding shape-shifter whose style moved effortlessly through his Blue and Rose periods to Cubism, Neo-Classicism and the avant-garde, the ground-breaking painter created artworks that transcend time and will be treasured forever. The Spanish artist was responsible for such masterpieces as Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, Weeping Woman and Guernica. A true ... Read more

Sylvester Stallone’s Expend4bles is ‘so bad…nothing makes sense’ – review | Films | Entertainment

The fourth instalment of Sylvester Stallone’s “geriaction” series is so bad, I honestly don’t know where to start. But I suppose the title is as good a place as any. Yes, I do know there’s a tradition of substituting numbers for letters, as in the Vin Diesel-led 2003 action sequel 2 Fast 2 Furious. That one sort of made sense but can anyone work out the pun in “Expend4bles”? If we are supposed to hear “expend foibles”, you’d expect Sly’s mercenary Barney to ditch at least two of his eccentricities, like riding that motorbike with the comically oversized rear tyre. ... Aquaman 2 trailer – Jason Momoa returns but where is Amber Heard? | Films | Entertainment

As teased earlier this week, Warner Bros have finally released their first full trailer for Aquaman 2. Jason Momoa shot Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom back in 2021 and since then the film has been through production chaos with reshoots and multiple test screenings. Set to finally release this Christmas and conclude the DCEU before James Gunn reboots the franchise with 2025’s Superman: Legacy, the first footage is action-packed and actually looks like some popcorn fun. However, what’s strange about the trailer is the fact that Mera star Amber Heard only features for a split second. Back in 2022, during ... Read more
