The most underrated modern Western of the 21st century is streaming on Netflix | Films | Entertainment

Earlier this week we alerted film fans to the most underrated Western of the 21st century. Like much of the genre, Christian Bale’s Hostiles is set in the Wild West of the 19th century. But what about those modern or “neo-Westerns” in a contemporary setting? In recent years we’ve had TV shows like Breaking Bad and The Coen Brothers’ Academy Award-winning No Country For Old Men. Patrick Barlow’s zany, barnstorming stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 movie has proved reliably entertaining since its premiere in 2005. Played at farce speed, Maria Aitken’s production is perfectly poised between frantic thriller and antic music hall, with the shapeshifting Safeena Ladha in three roles and Eugene McCoy and Maddy Rice quick changing their way through a multiplicity of characters while Tom Byrne’s Richard Hannay bounds from one hairsbreadth escape to another. The judicious use of miniatures, shadow puppets and ... Read more
