A Painter of High Society
Romà Ribera i Cirera (Barcelona, 1848-1935) was a talented artist from Catalonia who became famous for his detailed paintings of rich people’s social events. He also enjoyed painting scenes from the 17th and 18th centuries, showing his interest in history.
Early Life and Education
Ribera started his art education at the Escola de la Llotja and then studied at a private school run by Pere Borrell del Caso. In 1873, he went to Rome to further his studies. While in Rome, he met the influential painter Marià Fortuny, who had a big impact on Ribera’s style.
Building His Career
After his time in Rome, Ribera moved to London to show his work, and then he settled in Paris. Unlike many other artists at the time who were into Impressionism, Ribera was inspired by the detailed works of James Tissot and Alfred Stevens. His style was well-received, and he became successful at the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
Painting for the Rich
Ribera focused on painting scenes of wealthy people’s lives, capturing their activities and belongings in great detail. This focus helped him earn a good living and made him well-known as a painter of the upper class.
Return to Barcelona and Continued Success
In 1888, Ribera had a major exhibition at the Barcelona Universal Exposition, where he showcased a series of watercolors. He returned to Barcelona in 1889 and continued to exhibit his work at the Sala Parés gallery. He kept his focus on wealthy clients, just as he had in Paris. Ribera also traveled to Madrid to exhibit his work from time to time, gaining recognition in other parts of Spain.
Later Achievements
In 1902, Ribera was honored by being made a member of the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi. He was also chosen to be part of the Catalan Museum Board, recognizing his significant contributions to art.
